“…and the soul felt its worth.”

You may recognize that snippet from the Christmas carol “O Holy Night”.

It is also Anna’s special prayer for a particular someone in Kissing Father Christmas – A Novel. 

What is the worth of a soul? How does it “feel its worth”? 

Here’s more of the song:

O holy night the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new glorious morn
Fall on your knees
O hear the angels’ voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born…

Another way to look at it is like this:

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,  to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.  And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.  ~Galatians 4:4-7 (ESV)

A week from tonight is Christmas Eve. Looking ahead to that night, my prayer for you is similar to Anna’s. May your soul “feel its worth” this Christmas. And may we thank the true Father Christmas (God) Who shows us the worth of our souls with the Greatest Gift, His Son Jesus.
